San Onofre National Laboratory

Building a new national lab at the decommissioned site in San Onofre is a project that General Physics wants to develop alongside public and private partnerships. Seeking a home for fusion research, startup incubation, blockchain and AI development, global climate change research, marine science, shipbuilding technology, simulation and computational physics, supergrid technology, and high-speed rail are just some of the ideas that can be housed at this innovative space used to pivot to new technology in the twenty-first and twenty-second centuries. What is needed is a home for our science. We are actively engaged with community leaders and scientists who approach problems with a long-term focus. We have to build the cathedral. It means that solutions to problems require a vision and a decadal to century-long timeline in order to properly enter into multi-design-phase technology.

General Physics has to think about diversification. Maintaining our role as a neutral beam injection leader means focusing on the science of ion optics, neutralization, ionization, acceleration, electric field production, and magnetic confinement. Our fusion vision is similar. We cannot do this alone. We need advanced science teams working in a place where they can foster high-level collaboration. Virtual meetings are good, yet we need makers and machinists creating prototypes where the environment facilitates active work in the scientific sector.

High-level physics requires out-of-the-box thinking and an architecture for advancement. We have to create something that generations will use with a consolidation, linkage, and integration paradigm to effectively generate new and innovative ideas. Automated material handling, remote handling, robotic systems, AI integration, and parametric shipping efficiency consolidated at a facility with an artificial harbor, haulage freeway, heliport, and heavy train linkage will be crucial for our future vision.
